This month for our Women in Technology, we are spotlighting Elicia L, one of our Service Delivery Managers! Read about her story and how she started in technology.
I got into the tech industry when I first started working for Cingular Wireless at the time, then they migrated over to ATT. I was the top salesperson in Northern California for three months in a row. I wasn’t aware I was so good at sales until I started receiving rewards. Then I became the store manager of a Kiosk in Sacramento and Fairfield, CA.
I never thought I would want to work in technology. I wanted to go to law school at the time.
I have been on the Wireless Watchdogs side since 3/6/2007, but I started as a temp. Then I officially got hired at Wireless Watchdogs on 7/14/2007. So, almost 18 years in, and I love the company I work for, my clients, and I love what I do.
On my typical day, I start checking my emails and creating tickets in ConnectWise for me to work on them. Service Delivery Managers (SDMs) identify and find solutions for our clients’ needs and manage their accounts. We help our clients identify trends such as high data users, high international charges, unused devices, etc. With the help of an SDM, our clients are able to streamline their mobility environment, enhance security, cut costs, and improve efficiencies. I also sell extra services we have:
For women considering a career in the tech industry, here is my advice:
The tech industry is in need of more women, since diverse workers bring a variety of experiences and ideas, which results in better problem-solving and creativity. By incorporating women’s viewpoints, products and solutions are made to be more inclusive and cater to a broader market. Women are empowered economically and socially when they are more involved in high-paying and high-growth industries such as tech. Women in tech can benefit from mentoring and sponsorship from the broader community, who can guide them through their career development and support their accomplishments. Inspiring others and breaking stereotypes by recognizing women in tech with awards, media stories, and leadership recognition.
In the tech industry, women have the unique opportunity to challenge norms, contribute meaningfully, and pave the way for future generations.
I love having my monthly meetings with my clients. Yes, we talk business, but I have a lot of personal relationships with my clients. We talk about our kids and grandkids, where we are vacationing next, what we did for the weekend, etc. Building relationships with clients is incredibly fulfilling, especially in my role, where client relationships are central to success.
The best advice I’ve received is to always speak up for myself in this industry and advocate for yourself. I am worth it.
Tech is always evolving, so staying current with certifications and ongoing education is key. I recently completed the HiPo Leadership program back in September, and I’m very eager to get more into a Leadership role on the Wireless Watchdogs side of things. I have been looking into other leadership programs (HBS Online which is the Harvard Business School Online). This is a major thing for me. I have an appointment this week to discuss this program further with an admissions representative.
